Manual: 6: The Community Line Dances for FEBE

These are the community line dances performed at the events by everyone in order to give participants the unique sense of teamwork. You can make community line dances out of the tasks of creating a mud mixing pit, mixing the mud, moving the mud to the building site and mixing and applying the final plaster. Enhancing the performance aspect of these dances increases the synchronicity of the group which also increases the excitement, efficiency and effectiveness. In each diagram you can see dancers, ryhthm makers, and people preparing fresh food. The audience which is not shown is also an important aspect which brings these dances to life. The main dances for most events are the mixing dance and the passing dance. The digging dance is omitted when dirt is delivered because it is unsuitable to dig.

1. The Digging Dance

Digging a shallow pit to remove the topsoil and uncover the clay rich earth under the topsoil and big enough to fit the participants.

2. The Passing Dance

Bringing / passing the water and other ingredients (sand and fiber) in a line from the source to the dug out pit to mix.

In this diagram there are empty buckets being passed toward the river and full buckets being passed from the river into the pit to make the mud.

3. The Mixing Dance

Mixing the earth, water, sand and fiber in the pit with bare feet. To thoroughly mix the ingredients into one homogenous mixture.

4. Other dances.

Laying the mixture into building blocks in place or into forms to dry and lay later. (a variation of the passing dance) This includes sculpting furniture and other designs in the walls out of the mixture.

Also:
Sifting the ingredients (sand, subsoil, straw) to make finer mixtures for plasters.(the sifting dance)

Applying the plaster to the outside of the wall to create a smooth impermeable finish. (the plaster rubbing dance)

Creating a Dancepiece for Publicity - to publicize your event / project
Using these sequences, members of the team can create a short dance piece that mimics and encapsulates the whole process from digging a hole to laying the mud and plastering which can be used as publicity for the project and to get people ready and inspired. Performing the dance in public can be used as a way to enroll others to come and participate in the event. Practicing the dance with a small core team and on the day of the event before it is actually used for the building process will make everything go smoother and increase the effectiveness and efficiency.
