The 5th project. Atlanta GA, Summer 07

bench made of unfired earth with limestone plasterTogether with Georgia State University's Youth Enrichment Program, we built this small bench at the Lake Claire Community Land Trust near Candler Park. The group was about 25 youth aged 5 to 16 who were attending a week long hip hop dance performance camp. During the week the youth took out time to make mud bricks for a few hours. Then on the last day as part of their performance they did the stomping dance and passing dance to mix the mud and "mortar" or "cob" the bricks together to make the bench. Later we made a limestone and clay plaster with limestone, salt and flour and clay and applied it before finishing with linseed oil. This was an exciting step towards the vision of the program where performance dancing in front of an audience became the building process. This resulted in a relatively nice amount of building taking place in a very short period of time.
